Practice News

Dry January!

Dry January is the UK's one-month booze-free challenge that helps millions reset their relationship with alcohol every year.

Excessive alcohol consumption is a contrituing factor in many mouth cancer cases. Statistics from Cancer Research UK show that mouth cancer rates are seeing a rapid increase, since the 1990s rates have more than doubled in the UK. In 2014 there were 11,449 new cases of oral cancer in the UK; that’s around 31 people every day being diagnosed with this cancer. Mouth cancer is now the fourth most common cancer in men, and 12th most common in women.

However, drinkers are more at risk (especially if they smoke) so it’s important to understand how to recognise oral cancer and what you can do to reduce the risk. (drinkaware.co.uk)

If you would like to find out more about how to reduce your alcohol consumption please ask at the practice or alternativley you can download the free app supported by Dry January! This app helps you to track your drinking, noticing any patterns, track units and of course monitor how much you are spending on alcohol.

Good luck to anyone taking part in Dry January and we hope you feel the benefits of it!
